A sea drone, internationally known as a USV (unmanned surface vessel), is an unmanned vessel that sails over the water autonomously or by remote control. In this article we explain how a sea drone works, what it's used for and how it differs from a water drone.
What exactly is a sea drone?
A sea drone is a vessel without a crew on board that sails across the water surface on its own. The English term is USV: unmanned surface vessel. Unlike an underwater drone (ROV or AUV), a sea drone operates at the surface. The vessel is controlled by an autonomy system, the 'brain', that combines sensors, detects obstacles and computes a safe course.
Sea drone or water drone: what's the difference?
The terms are often used interchangeably. 'Water drone' is the broader umbrella term for any unmanned vessel, regardless of where it sails: a lake, river or harbour. 'Sea drone' emphasises deployment at open sea, such as the North Sea, where the vessel has to withstand waves, current and salt water. A sea drone is therefore a water drone built specifically for sea conditions.
How does a sea drone work?
The heart of every sea drone is the autonomy system. It consists of several cooperating components:
- Sensor fusion: cameras, radar, sonar and AIS/GPS are combined into one reliable picture of the surroundings.
- AI decision module: detects obstacles and computes the optimal, safe course.
- Navigation engine: handles route planning, course keeping and autonomous manoeuvres.
- Communication: sends live imagery, data and advice to the operator on shore or aboard another vessel.
What are sea drones used for?
Sea drones are deployed for tasks that are dangerous, repetitive or costly with a crewed vessel. The main applications are search & rescue (delivering flotation and locating people in the water), inspection & survey (quay inspection, bathymetric depth measurement and water-quality monitoring) and workboat tasks such as light transport and towing assistance.
